Last month, I posted that I was going to be participating in Sweet Progress' Fall Swap. Well, it's time to do a big reveal. I was paired with Lauren from Shooting Stars Mag and she put together an awesome box filled with treats. Lauren is a book blogger who also loves Harry Potter and does a ton of reviews from a variety of genres.
She put together a great package. It arrived on Halloween and I just kept pulling treat after treat out of the box! There was an adorable owl mug, Starbucks coffee, candy, Halloween treats, a tea light holder, a cute little ghost in a jar, a new book to read, and a soft and cozy throw!
I just love it all! Especially that owl mug. It's just too cute. The book looks great. The throw is so soft, I unwrapped it and already caught the cat trying it out. We always keep our house a little on the chilly side for my taste, so it's going to come in handy on those chilly fall and winter days. It was such a fun package to open.
If you want to see what everyone else got, you can find they link up at Mrs AOK and Happy. Pretty. Sweet. Check it out, and follow one or both of these great ladies so that you'll know when the winter swap is taking place.

Fall Sweet Progress Swap is Open
Guys! This job change is seriously wrenching up my mojo! I really like the job and the people I work with, but it's been way harder for me to adjust to getting up and going to work in the morning and then having the evening free instead of having all morning free and then rolling in to work at three in the afternoon. But, it's getting better. I've been making lists and working on getting back in a routine.
This week I have lots of exciting blog stuff planned and I'm kicking it off today with the announcement that Happy. Pretty. Sweet. and Mrs. AOK have opened the sign ups for the autumn edition of the Sweet Progress swap. Remember when I signed up last July for the summer edition? Well, now we're on to a new season so it's time to get ready for more fun!
If you're interested in joining up here's what you need to know:

Musical Mondays: Ritual Union from Little Dragons (Maya Jane Coles Remix)
Warning, this song will get stuck in your head.
I find myself humming it at work and singing the refrain under my breath. And I'm not sure why but it really seems appropriate for this summer is over, fall is coming weather we've been having in Wisconsin. Leaves are already changing, people! We've had frost a couple times and my flowers are pretty much done. I love fall, so I don't mind too badly, but winter gets uncomfortably long here, and within three months we'll probably have snow.
But, I'm trying to be more positive and focus on the good things in life. It's too easy to get sidetracked with the yucky stuff and miss all the good stuff right under your nose. So I'm going to soak up all the nice days autumn gives us.
I don't really have any back story for why I chose this song this week, other than it's a long time favorite and it felt right. There's no real video to go with this remix, but it's so good it doesn't need a video.
So I hope you all are enjoying whatever kind of weather mother nature is giving you and we'll catch up more in a few days. In the meantime, be sure to check out Miss Angie's blog and see what everyone is listening to this Musical Monday.

Veggie Barley Soup
This isn't a recipe so much as some basic instructions. What I love about soup is that you can do pretty much whatever you want and it will probably turn out. You can add more of one type of veggie, skip another one totally, whatever your little heart desires and somehow it works. Here's the "formula" I use when making veggie soup.
Start with fresh veggies. I know some recipes call for cans of things or frozen things, but I think fresh always has more flavor. For today's soup I used leeks and carrots from the farmer's market, kale and parsley from my garden, and mushrooms and celery from the grocery store.
Once you have them into small pieces, add them to your soup pot with a drizzle of oil or a tablespoon or two of butter. Saute these on low heat until your veggies are tender. I always add my mushrooms next and stir until tender. I like mushrooms so I usually use a whole pack, but if you don't like mushrooms, feel free to skip them. After that, you add your root vegetables. I used carrots (three, but you can use more or less), but you can also use turnips, parsnips, or potatoes, or again, any combination of these. I also added a handful of chopped parsley. Give them a couple stirs and then add your broth. I usually use 4 to 6 cups of broth. If I'm using barley, couscous, rice or quinoa, I use more broth than if i use orzo or egg noodles, because grains tend to suck up more of the broth than noodles do.
If you're adding meat, be sure it's precooked it and add it now. If I use chicken I like to let it simmer on the stove for a while. You could also use ground hamburger, chunks of stew meat, or a cut up round steak. I usually just use veggies.
Turn the heat to medium or medium-high, and wait for the broth to start to boil. Then add your grain or noodle. Remember that barley and other grains take longer to cook than noodles or orzo will. Once my pasta or grain is cooked, I like to add a bunch of chopped kale and let it simmer until done. Once the kale is tender (which only takes 5-10 minutes) your soup is ready to eat.
This soup tastes great warmed up and it wonderful when you have a cold or just need something warm and yummy. It's also a good way to use up veggies that have been living in your refrigerator's crisper for a while and are getting kind of wilty and sad.

A Few Favorites 9.29
Autumn is here. The leaves are changing. Sweaters and boots are back. You can order something with pumpkin in the name at just about any restaurant you stop at. So, naturally, my favorite things this week are leaning a little towards autumnal things.
1. Autumn means time to curl up with a book. What Should I Read Next is a fun webpage were you type in the name or author of a book you enjoyed, hit enter, and peruse a list of books it recommends for you that are similar to what you had entered.
2. Gingerbread Cookie Perfume Oil is from Etsy Shop Symbolic Imports. This shop has great smelling products and fabulous customer service. I ordered this perfume last year and it smells good, without smelling like you're a walking gingerbread man. I always got comments about how good it smelled. I'd say it's defiantly an autumn/winter scent, but it's not overpoweringly strong, and it comes in a roll on, so it's easy to carry in your bag.
3. This African Flower Crochet Pattern is from a new blog I came across called The Yvestown Blog. The blog is full of beautiful photos and crafty things. I love this African Flower design. It kind of reminds me of a hipper version of a granny square and looks simple enough. If I ever get going and learn to crochet, I want to make some of these for sure.
4. This Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer from Shugary Sweets is a tasty little treat for your coffee. I made it with half and half instead of whipping cream, but I think next time I make it, I may splurge and use the cream. Also, it tastes better the next day, after the flavors have had a chance to meld a little. I strained all the little pieces of pumpkin out the next day, just because I didn't like them in the bottom of my cup, but it's totally a preference thing.
So there you are, four fun things to try. What do you think of autumn? Are you ready, or are you dreading it?
